ALBUM REVIEW: Lotte Mullan “Plain Jane”

Record Label: Raindog Records
Release Date: 02.08.2010

At the tender age of two, country girl Lotte Mullan was already obsessed with music. Paul Simon’s “Graceland” to be precise. So obsessed, that the two year old Lotte’s mother believed she was a child genius for her lyrical ability till the connection was discovered. By thirteen, Lotte had gotten into indie, dumping Paul Simon for Sleeper’s Louise Wener. Her allegiance altered once again when at fourteen a boy she fancied asked her if she liked Beth Orton. She said yes, despite having never heard of Beth Orton.

However, it is this last in a long line of musical influences that is most evident on Lotte’s debut album “Plain Jane”. An honest, simple collection that breezily uplifts.

“Plain Jane” never really changes gear, but then it doesn’t really need to. Notably “La La Love You” sees the innocent sounding Lotte in chirpy radio friendly mode. However, it is the naughtily delciious “Wicked Way” that truly shines through.

VIDEO: Lotte Mullan “Can’t Find The Words”

Simplicity is central to all that is Suffolk’s Lotte Mullan.  The folk-inspired pop driven singer/songwriter is all set to release her debut album “Plain Jane” on August 2nd and it is lovely to see her debut single following the uncomplicated approach she has to her writing. Directed by her primary school boyfriend Daniel Lucchesi, the video sees Lotte Mullan effortlessly looking as stunning as Delta Goodrem breathing out her thoughts as she prepares for a night out. Captivating and compelling.
