FESTIVAL REVIEW: Summer Sundae, Leicester

Summer Sundae is a The Kaje favourite. A city festival which is so far removed from the city. Just a stone’s throw from Leicester city centre, Victoria Park is transported for one weekend a year to a world of artistic wonder. With performers including Adam
Ant, Katy B, Ocean Colour Scene and Patrick Wolf on the line-up, 2012 was full of early promise.

However, the Katy B headlined Friday night failed to live up to expectations. With a distinctly small audience wandering between four performance spaces, it was difficult for any real buzz to be created. While Bastille packed out a sweaty Watering Hole, Patrick Wolf mourned diminished audiences in Crocodile’s Lagoon for his tender acoustic set. For her part, Katy B pulled in the punters and had all ages bouncing to her euphoric pop-dub.

Thankfully the sun shone on Saturday and the audience arrived in droves. With a spring in everyone’s step, Victoria Park was abuzz. Hotly tipped girl rockers Savages brought a touch of Juliette Lewis inspires glamour to the day, while the lush Lucy Rose won hearts with her wistful woes. Birmingham’s Goodnight Lenin’s Stornoway-esque folk captured hearts, while Adam Ant made everyone ‘Stand Up and Deliver’ with a riotous set. Ocean Colour Scene were worthy headliners, though the stand out performances of the day came from the enchanting Agnes Obel and addictive Lianne La Havas.

Sunday saw rain but few were deterred. Appearing far too early in the line-up were Leicester’s finest Midnight Wire, who out in a set so fresh and energetic that memories of early Arctic Monkeys were provoked. Equally exciting are Norway’s Team Me who whip the main stage into a frenzy. Beth Rowley and Juan Zelada both inject a little blues into the day, but it is Sheffield’s Hey Sholay that steal the crown with an unforgettable romp.

As ever Summer Sundae does not disappoint. An eclectic line up celebrates an array of artists and caters to all tastes. While there were a handful of lowlights, notably the over-hyped Friends and frantic Japandroids, here at The Kaje we say roll on 2013-though next time have La Havas headline!

NEWS: Patrick Wolf Announces New Album And Tour

Patrick Wolf is celebrating 10 years of making music with the release of the double-album, Sundark & Riverlight, featuring re-recordings of songs from Wolf’s entire catalogue, out September 25 on Bloody Chamber Music/Essential Music. In conjunction with the release, Wolf will be embarking on a world tour, including a date in London at The Old Vic Theatre on August 29, amongst other intimate UK dates.

Of the album, Wolf stated, “This project started when I realised I had reached a 10 year jubilee as a recording artist. My first EP came out when I was I9 and in the 10 years hence, my voice has grown with me. I started out playing with just one instrument and singing with no microphones in folk clubs, on the streets and galleries. I missed that raw communication so much and the spontaneous energy of that live situation. When I went to the studio I thought I was going to record a one-man solo album, but I started to dream, and heard bassoons and bodhrans. This is my first totally acoustic album and so I made certain that we were working with analogue tape and recording equipment. I went on a mission to find a grand piano with the best bass response still full of character and I was told about Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios, but the piano there was too new for me. So Peter lent me his Bosendorfer Grand and later his bodhran and hammer dulcimer – the album and I are very grateful.”

Sundark & Riverlight highlights Wolf’s skills as a songwriter, arranger and vocalist, recreating his catalogue which has delved from folk to pop to industrial over the course of five full-length albums. Instead of simply picking the songs which were released as singles from each full-length, Wolf chose the songs that he felt relevant to him today. Said Wolf, “As a songwriter I realised that some songs take on a life of their own once released. I never knew that “Paris” from Lycanthropy would become such an anthem for my crowd. Often when I sing the songs live after they are recorded, new words or meanings come to light then i improvise depending on how I am feeling that night. I thought It was time after ten years to take a moment to understand and document what these songs have grown up to be while I’ve been travelling them around the world the last decade.”

Summer Sundae Weekender are delighted to announce the fifth wave of artists on 2012’s line up, establishing the event once again as an essential date in the summer music calendar.

Micachu and the Shapes take pop into unchartered territory and have been known to take to the stage with an array of customized and homemade instruments. Amongst their musical inventions is a xylophone constructed from light bulbs, and a musical ‘Cloud Chamber’ made out of Pyrex dishes. Signed to Mike Skinner’s record label, Man Like Me is one of the most hotly tipped acts around. Their highly energetic mix of vibrant beats, cheap synths and strange sounds is intoxicating. Brit Award nominee Beth Rowley drifts seamlessly through many different musical styles, melding blues, country, folk, gospel and Latin American music into her own soulful sound. The Staves songwriting is striking and exquisite, a melding of still, bright English Folk and sublime West Coast pop that when performed live is capable of plunging an audience into awed silence. Bastille began as an alternative identity for Dan Smith whose ‘Flaw’ video went viral at the start of 2011. Since then Bastille has continued to soak up the spirit of revolution and change that his name connotes producing an array of mesmerizing noir ballads and infectious anthems. Leicester singer-songwriter Charlee Drew has acquired an impressive online following over the course of the past year. Having featured on Skepta’s album and joined him on tour he is now working on his anticipated debut album. Also added to the bill are Leicestershire locals Ktye who bring shimmering ambience to the world of pop, Cowboy who have have reformed and are back this year with their new EP and finally legends of the local music scene Bellawave.

Joining the Drowned in Sound stage are Japandriods. On a musical mission to be ‘maximal,’ The Canadian duo’s dynamic sound runs the gauntlet of rock & roll sub genres and could easily be interpreted as the output of five or more musicians. Post- Rockers Her Name is Calla have gained critical acclaim for their dazzling take on dynamic guitar music.

Also at this year’s Summer Sundae Weekender, taking place at The Watering Hole on the morning of Sunday 19th August is The Acoustic Café. This will feature performances from some of Leicester’s hottest local talent including the dramatic and mysterious Siobhan Mazzei, the free flowing, soulful vocals of Prash Gor, a dash of acapella and barbershop from The Simpletones and the ukulele equipped The Skunk-Boy Project.

Single Of The Week: Kites “Brother”

London based independent quartet Kites have been garnering a lot of attention for the brooding beats and melanchonic mood. With comparisons to Depeche Mode and Patrick Wolf being thrown at them from all sides, it would be fair to say that those that don’t already follow the quartet soon will. “Brother” is far from your standard stocking filler, but that makes it all the more worthy..
