FILM REVIEW: Iron Man 2

Director: John Favreau
Release date: 29.04.2010

Some films you know what to expect.  Iron Man was one of them.  So, Iron Man 2…  Well, it’s a sequel. It picks up where the first film left off but that doesn’t mean that you have to have seen the first film to be able to follow the story.

The film focuses on the excesses of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), who cannot cope with the idea that he is dying. Thrown into the mix are two baddies, who may out act Downey Jr. but never come close in the looks department. Hammer (Sam Rockwell) and Ivan (Mickey Rourke) are both working towards discrediting Tony Stark, one for personal gain and one for personal revenge. Thrown into the mix is the fast paced dialogue sequences between Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) and Stark, and a strange friendship with the Colonel (Don Cheadle). Finally, not really worth a mention, is Scarlett Johansson in a leather cat suit. Her redundant role is only there because there wasn’t enough, as a friend of mine so eloquently put it, “boob” in the film.

So to sum up, if you’re a fan, its worth seeing. You get two men in Iron Men suits simultaneously, a big ass Iron Man suit for Mr Rourke, and a few droids thrown into the mix.  If you have no idea who or what “The Avengers” are, its worth knowing before you go, because in reality this film is the set up of something bigger. The film is like two hours of waiting while watching fights, with your reprieve only hinted at after the closing credits.

Rating: 3/5
