The Kaje talks December Sessions to Kelly Rowland

Kelly Rowland is no longer only known as one third of Destiny’s Child. While early solo success included the irrepressible Nelly duet “Dilemma” and the tender “Stole”, Rowland was for a long time the victim of her earlier success. However, rather than run away from the critics, Rowland stayed her ground and ensured that with each release her material stood the test. With her judging role on X Factor and numerous David Guetta collaborations having served only to raise her profile, Rowland has unleashed her finest work to date in the shape of “Here I Am”. With Rowland ready to right the wrongs, she talks openly to The Kaje about her early days…

Can you tell us about the one moment that gave you a big break in your career?

It was firstly meeting Whitney and secondly performing on the Grammy’s for the first time. You feel like you’ve really arrived in that moment because you’re performing in front of your peers and these are the people that actually vote for you to get a Grammy Award. I respect the Grammy’s so much.

Was performing live important for you when you were trying to get a name for yourself?

Absolutely. I just remember coming up with Destiny’s Child and we would watch video tapes of Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, The Jackson 5 and the Supremes and look at how they were having fun above anything but how they just commanded the audience and you have to embrace that as a performer and constantly work on that as well.  It’s pretty hard to go out there and do your first live performance. I mean you’re performing in front of so many people but it’s also important to have fun. You have to have fun.

People are saying right now that we need to nurture new talent more than ever because of record companies wanting to take less of a punt on new acts due to reduced budgets – would you agree and if so why do you think new talent is so important?

I think there are new ways to invest in new talent. I’m investing in myself. There used to be a time when record labels would shoot so many different video’s and have more of a budget but it is all stripped down now. But when you believe in something you put money behind it.

What advice would you give to up an up and coming act trying to break through right now?
Definitely self promote, find places to perform and get out there. Perform everywhere. And YouTube – I constantly go on to YouTube to find new things and ideas, it’s such a great inspiration.

This will be the megastar Diva’s first UK tour in over two years and follows the critically acclaimed, Stronger With Each Tear which reached Top 5 on the UK R&B chart and No1 in the same US Chart. This latest album has as its central theme the idea that we know that if we want to achieve anything we have to accept that our work is never over, and by keeping going, all the trials, tribulations and tears only make us stronger.

The Kaje talks Summer Sundae Weekender to Lissie

Lissie may have only just released her debut album “Catching A Tiger”, but the Illinois girl has been on the music circuit for a long time – with notable highlights including a Lenny Kravitz support slot and a Grammy nomination for the Deadmau5 remix of her Morgan Page collaboration “The Longest Road”. With her next six months pencilled to be spent in the UK, Lissie plans to make the most of the summer sun by spending the time performing at a host of festivals. When The Kaje caught up with her, she was all excited about Summer Sundae Weekender

Summer Sundae Weekender kicks off in August. Whats your favourite thing about summer festivals?

When it comes to summer festivals, I love how crowds of strangers work together to pull off a great experience.. Where the dynamic and comradery of the attendees is just as important as the acts themselves!  Plus, wandering around barefoot in the same outfit for a few days on very little sleep, all unkept gives one a sense of being primitive, of freedom. There is something invigorating and life affirming about it.

What can we expect from your show?

An earnest and super charged performance, with both tender moments and rocking, red in the face ones!

Summer Sundae is renowned for showcasing emerging talent. Which new band are you most looking forward to catching?

As far as new bands I don’t know about yet… I’ll have to figure that out as I go along but I just got off the road with “The Low Anthem” and they are incredible, so I’m excited that they’re playing Summer Sundae as well.  I look forward to seeing them do their thing in a festival setting on the other side of the ocean!

The festival has also been graced by legends like Patti Smith, Billy Bragg and Chrissie Hynde. What is your fondest festival memory?

Wow!  That’s amazing!  My fondest festival memory happened in Tennessee at Bonnaroo when I was nineteen.  All three days, I just ran around taking it all in… Then when I got tired, I’d just go out in a field and lay down and nap.  It was like some sort of utopia for me at the time.  It was pretty hot and sunny the whole way through and then on the last day it poured rain for five minutes which was the perfect way to cool off, get clean, and wrap it all up.

The festival turns ten this year how did you celebrate your tenth birthday?

Happy birthday!  Funnily enough, I was Annie in the musical “Annie” when I was nine and ten. I had a performance on the night of my tenth birthday and all my friends came to watch. Afterwards we went next door to this comedy club called Comedy Sportz where we ate pizza and caught a show.  My hair was dyed red at the time. Its a trip to pull out pictures from back then!
