NEWS: BASTILLE Announces ‘Flaws’ As Latest Single

Only the brave and original survive the indie music maelstrom which either sucks new guitar bands down into the depths or produces identikit sounds based on trends at any given time. Bastille have moved away from the common output being churned out by indie bands to create great pop songs that are absorbing and genre-defining without ever being formulaic.

Live fan favourite, ‘Flaws’ is Bastille’s third single release on Virgin Records. The single was originally heard by fans when lead singer,/songwriter and producer Dan Smith uploaded a makeshift D.I.Y video for the track, piecing together footage from Terence Malick’s 1973 classic ‘Badlands’.

The video for the track has been watched over half a million times and struck a chord with youtube viewers from all over the world who posted their own cover versions.

The new video for ‘Flaws’ will be made available next week and has been directed by Austin Peters (Haim, ‘Forever’). Following on from the mysterious drowning in the video for previous single ‘Bad Blood’, ‘Flaws’ was shot in Coney Island, which was also the setting for cult film ‘Requiem For A Dream, the soundtrack of which Dan used in the band’s cover version of Lana Del Rey’s ‘Blue Jeans’ and features on their cinematic mixtape/mini-album Other People’s Heartache.

Like many Bastille songs, ‘Flaws’ was written and initially recorded by Dan in his bedroom on an old laptop. It is based on a story with characters going through their own emotions and existing solely in the universe of each song. Like Regina Spektor, Dan’s songs are his stories; vehicles to muse on things he wants to talk about and this resonates with their fans, who find a personal element to the music.

The band have appeared at more than thirty festivals this summer and recently played a storming set to a packed out tent at Reading Festival, 3000 fans, arms aloft singing along to all the words. Straight after their set Bastille appeared on BBC3 performing an acoustic version of their last single ‘Bad Blood’  and were trending on twitter after their performance.

Having sold out their first ever headline tour, Bastille continue to sell out shows across the UK and recently announced their second headline tour. Despite only releasing two singles, the band have already sold out London’s Koko as well as dates in Manchester and Birmingham seven weeks upfront.

With so much momentum and their debut album released early next year, it seems like Bastille are leading the pack as one of the major players of 2013.
