Single of the Week: Mary Epworth “Long Gone” / Alex Kelly “Orange Circle”

What with it being the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend and everything, here at The Kaje we decided it seemed only apt to celebrate two of music’s upcoming challengers for the Queen of Pop title…

Mary Epworth admitted to The Kaje last week that her latest single “Long Gone” is her favourite song from her upcoming album “Dream Life”. Having fallen head over heels for the singer/songwriter when she released the grandiloquent “Black Doe”, “Long Gone” impresses in a more subdued manner. While it still oozes grandeur, it verges on beautiful balladry yet never nears overblown.

New Yorker Alex Kelly could not be more different from the aforementioned English rose. Having risen to prominence as the vocalist of Amungus, Goo Goo Dolls’ Robby Takac’s electro-pop side-project, Kelly is a sugary sweet that bites back. Debut single “Orange Circle” is a riotous romp that gets the shoulder shaking and feet stomping in an effortlessly charged sing along. Pure pop perfection that puts a smile on your face and the sun in your heart even when outside the rain is relentless.
