The Kaje talks ‘Multiple Love’ to Paper Aeroplanes

Sarah Howells and Richard Llewellyn started their musical partnership Paper Aeroplanes in West Wales almost six years ago and the time has flown by since their debut album “The Day We Ran Into The Sea” started making waves for them three years ago. Having followed up their debut album with the mini album “We Are Ghosts” in 2010, the duo have been locked away writing and recording their upcoming third album. With latest single, the luscious “Multiple Love” offering a taster of what is to come, The Kaje caught up with Sarah Howells to find out what we can expect…

Wales is known for its vocalists – why do you think it produces such musicality?

I think Wales’s musicality is definitely a part of our heritage and tradition. The Eisteddford, which is a national music and arts competition and also something that lots of schools take part in, is an important part of school life and means that singing becomes the norm from an early age. The landscape and the fact that we’re far away from the bigger cities is also inspiring to me and my music. There’s lots of blustery sea air to bellow into in Milford Haven!

Which Welsh artists do you turn to for inspiration?

I’m a huge Gruff Rhys fan. He writes such great melodies and live he uses really interesting arrangements and musicians. Also love a bit of Y Niwl and Joy Formidable.

Your latest track ‘Multiple Love’ is the first taster from your third album. Can you tell us a little bit about the track?

It’s a brutally honest song about the power of being single and not settling for anything less than real love. People keep mentioning heartbreak though…

A lead single is often quite leading, would you describe it as a taster of what is to come?

‘Multiple Love’ is almost a taster of what’s to come yes. It’s darker, more honest and confident than our previous releases. We’re not going to make a piano driven album or anything but the sentiment and the mood are definitely an indicator of what album 3 will be like. We’ll
have more instruments on the album though. Drums are going to play a bigger part than in the past.

How do you select your singles?

Ooh partly on the songs we love and occasionally when we’re not sure we’ll ask our friends and family which they like the best. It’s just about choosing the strongest songs..the ones we’re most proud of.

How long will we have to wait for album 3?

Hopefully just until Autumn/ Winter 2012.

Have you approached the album differently to the last two?

We’re going to be using a bigger studio and an engineer this time. We’ve made our past two releases in Rich’s flat and while we’ve loved that freedom and simplicity, we’re ready to get someone on board to help and have more space and the excitement of a new location….with
lots of buttons and guitars hanging round!!

What are they key tracks we should listen out for?

‘Circus’ and ‘When the Windows Shook’ are two faves of mine but it doesn’t mean there’ll be yours. We’re sometimes surprised by the tracks that sell the most and get the most feedback at gigs.

With each album do your ambitions for Paper Aeroplanes grow?

Our ambitions have always been pretty big, but in general we just want to keep on making a living from music and be able to fund tours and make records. Ideally we’d like world fame!

If there was one ambition you could fulfill by the turn of 2013, what would it be?

A Later with Jools Holland slot ..but that’s a long shot. We’d be pretty chuffed with a session on Lauren Laverne’s 6music radio show too.
