The Kaje Sessions: Asami

Fronted by one time Popstars contestant Asami Koike, Asami are a Melbourne quartet who know a thing or two about piecing together a pop tune.  Having unleashed their sophomore EP “Please Stay” at the end of 2011, Asami have wasted little time in exploring new material. Having just completed a residency at The Evelyn and played the after show party for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ Melbourne show, The Kaje are feeling super privileged to host an acoustic recording of their latest track “Signs Of You”.

Where did you record The Kaje Session?

On a secret rooftop overlooking a helipad in Melbourne.

What made you choose to use this location?

The song has a sort of uplifting, gospel vibe going on and so we thought somewhere light and airy would suit. We also shot it at dusk to get some nice colours.

What is the most unusual live date you have ever played?

We had this time when several shows had been booked back to back and on the last night we played to a big empty room with only the soundguy present. He was too shy and weird to watch us so he was crouching down behind the sound desk. We played a great set to the top of his head.  We also had a falling out with him just before we performed so that was … awkward.  On a brighter note, we played at an 80th Birthday once and got a really good reception, which was fun!

What made you choose “Signs of You” for the session?

“Signs of You” is one of our newbies and is probably the most mature sounding song that we have. I guess we chose to do this song for the Kaje Session because of its strength as a purely acoustic song, and plus, it’ll be on our next EP!  Thanks for featuring us!
