LIVE REVIEW: Hyde and Beast , Water Rats Theatre (London) 16.11.2011

So we get a little bit lost, and eventually stumble into Water Rats Theatre, Kings Cross. It is exactly as you would imagine a theatre called Water Rats to be.

It is small, it is dingy and the musicians do their own sound check.

I love it.

After people-watching a fairly eclectic mix of Wednesday evening moochers form a small crowd,  Hyde and Beast are ready.

New to the band, their informal and unassertive take to the stage throws me- is this them? Surely not. The first few songs do not reassure me. It’s only when the band kicks in with “Pictures In the Sky” that I really relax and breathe a sigh of relief. Yes, I am at the right gig.

Highlights included a bashful newcomer to the band in the form of Jack, an honorary trumpet player found on their travels, as well as “You Will Be Lonely” and “All Because Of You” which saw the small crowd of stone cold weirdo’s happily foot stomping along. However, the energy dipped as the six man strong band all turned to ‘Beast’ Bassett on drums for reassurance and it feels a little bit like a school play with a hasty prompt or two needed from behind the shadows.

Great cameos from the session musicians and a fatherly confidence from ‘Beast’ saw the band in the right direction, but I came with my dancing boots on and was disappointed to find them only quietly thomping along in this instance.
