LIVE REVIEW: Angus and Julia Stone, Royal Festival Hall (London), 09/12/2010

Julia Stone is a little show-stealer.

It’s true.

I didn’t want to admit this, but I went to the Angus and Julia Stone concert prepared for my girlish crush on Angus stone. But I was not prepared for Julia.

Barefoot in a silvery full-length dress, all that was missing was some flowers in her hair.

The more talkative of the two; Julia charms the audience with child-like sweetness and infectious passion. Her little girl lost voice is not to be trusted as she can tear down the ceiling with dramatic numbers such as her rendition of “you’re the one that I want” and “for you”, which left the audience holding their breath.

Before launching into “for you” Julia joked that it was written for a man who left her to live in the Jungle. I wonder if anyone else was left questioning the man’s sanity…

Angus was a magnet for every female in the theatre when he did speak up. Dedicating “just a boy” to a very “special lady he met drunk at a festival” women laughed a bit too hard, wishing they had the delight of meeting a drunken Angus and thus being forever sanctified by his song.

The stage felt like one extended family home with a huge tree, fairy lights and a discarded bottle of wine lying around…which the phone call to Mr. Stone only added to. (The Stones had forgotten their father’s birthday and so-called home mid-gig to sing happy birthday with just a few “friends” from London in the background.) I left feeling as though I’d just spent a great evening at a friend’s house. We had discussed all the big topics love and fidelity, family and experiences and I was a little bit drunk on their home-brewed beer.
