FILM REVIEW: The Expendables

Director: Sylvester Stallone

Ok, the cast list is amazing… Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger… but do not let that fool you. This action movie, directed and co-written by Stallone is not quite awful, just bad. It was not received well in the cinemas and it probably will not be received well on the small screen.

The story line is sketchy. There is a team of six mercenaries who kill, on the whole, bad people, but really they’ll kill anyone as long as they are paid. Two of the mercenaries, Stallone and Statham go to assess a possible job, creating shit for a girl to clean up because she will not leave with them. Then Stallone develops a conscience and they go back in to save the girl who only got into trouble because they were there in the first place. As I said… sketchy.

But to be fair to the film it has a few good points. It has a couple of great one liners and a very funny running joke about Jet Li’s height. It also has a wonderful scene where Jason Statham goes and beats the shit out of his ex-girlfriends boyfriend who hit her. Watching Jason Statham beat up a man for a woman does make your heart just a little bit jealous. And that is exactly where the list of good points ends.
