BOOK REVIEW: Alex Barclay “Time Of Death”

Publisher: Harper

The new novel by Alex Barclay is the second book featuring Ren Bryce. Set in the Rocky Mountains Bryce is an FBI agent who hunts for dangerous criminals. When someone close to her is murdered her life is turned upside down. She is fighting to preserve her credibility as an agent. The hunt is on for Ren Bryce.

As a fan of this genre I realised that it probably would have been better if I had read the previous Ren Bryce novel as they are linked. It did not detract from enjoying this story but, felt as if I had missed out on something.

Bryce is a very likeable character, who is bi-polar, with a wonderful acerbic wit. Barclay gives depth to her characters and develops the relationships between them. She has an interesting writing style which is easy to read.

This is a thriller with a good storyline, if at times it felt like there was too much going on. There were a few surprises but, as a reader I enjoy subtlety with dramatic twists.  I believe we should always assume our audience is two steps ahead of us, or so they think.  I have no doubt Alex Barclay; writer of three other thrillers, Darkhouse, The Caller and Blood Runs Cold is probably in the middle of penning her next novel.
