ALBUM REVIEW: Lauren Pritchard “Wasted In Jackson”

Record Label: Island
Release Date: 25.10.2010

A decade ago an album was released by a new female soloist that got me so excited that I wanted to scream from the rooftops about it. The album was not a commercial success as the singer disappeared quickly into musical obscurity. The artist was Shea Seger and the album “The May Street Project”. Yet it has taken to today to – the excitement that one album filled me with. With her suitably titled debut solo effort “Wasted In Jackson”, Tennessee born Lauren Pritchard hits every note and send shivers down the spine.

“Wasted In Jackson” is what can only be described as a rich album. Every track oozes perfection, but it is the stop start “Hope It’s You” that epitomises every that is right with the record. Pritchard’s sun soaked vocal is rich and warm, but contains within it the ability to show woe with a distinct clarity.

Pritchard cites Billy Joel as her strongest inspiration, yet one a musical level the similarities are not overtly apparent. Yet just a brief look at Pritchard’s lyrical journey and it is immediately apparent that Pritchard believes in the brutal honesty that Joel also demonstrates.

“Wasted In Jackson” is not aligned to current 80s heavy chart, but with strong female vocalists like Lissie coming to the fore, the release of “Wasted In Jackson” is perfectly timed. Pritchard slides in to the fold effortlessly and there is little need for the girl from Jackson to feel her efforts are a waste.
