NEWS: Celebrated spoken word artist Inua Ellams brings ‘Untitled’ to The REP this October

Celebrated spoken word and graphic artist Inua Ellams brings Untitled to The REP from 20 to 23 October in The Door.

Untitled is a magical, lyrical piece that tells the story of two identical Nigerian twins, separated at birth. This nationwide tour of Untitled coincides with the 50th anniversary of Nigeria Independence.

This one-man performance tells the story of how, in the quarrel after the marred naming ceremony, the mother flees with the titled child, leaving the unnamed brother to lead an impetuous, chaotic, blasphemous existence, until the spirits of the land make their stand.

The story follows the lives of both brothers: the first, living a successful life in England, the second leading a chaotic, drifting, and tragic existence back in Nigeria. Through the piece Inua explores themes of identity and destiny; the rational versus the irrational, and the clashes experienced by first generation immigrants.

Still only 25 years old, Inua has achieved considerable success as both a visual artist and poet. He has performed in a wide variety of venues and festivals, including the National Theatre, Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Tate Modern, Glastonbury and Latitude, in addition to extensive work as a workshop facilitator in universities and schools across the UK. Untitled is inspired by his own real life experiences of being a twin, and his feelings of dual identity, Nigerian and English – split between two cultures.

Untitled is produced by Fuel. Founded in 2004 and led by Louise Blackwell and Kate McGrath, Fuel is a producing organisation working in partnership with some of the most exciting theatre artists in the UK to develop, create and present new work for all ages.

Untitled is written and performed by Inua Ellams, directed by Thierry Lawson, designed by Peter Arnold, with lighting design by Michael Nabarro.

This show is co-commissioned by Soho Theatre, Fuel and Contact and developed as part of Fuel at the Roundhouse and The Jerwood Residencies Cove Park Funded by Arts Council England.
