LIVE REVIEW: Hauschka, Vortex (London), 04.10.10

With his third album “Foreign Places” marking a move away from solo piano, acclaimed German pianist and composer Volker Bertelmann (a.k.a Hauschka) started the evening with Jeff Desom’s celebrated short film and music video before moving into performance. Eager to explain the difference between his earlier work and his upcoming release, the solo Bertelmann stated that his newer compositions were impossible to recreate in a solo setting. So instead his expectant audience were in for a rather special treat.

An expert in the prepared piano, Hauschka made the most of his intimate setting to give insight to his compositional process. A clear connection to the intricacies of piano, Hauschka was able to effortlessly demonstrate the many layers that are often missed. After all, he explains, the piano is percussion.

When Hauschka plays, he is clearly transported. His explorational improvisations reached a climax when, during his third and final improvisation of the evening, Hauschka demonstrated the difference between the prepared and the stripped back sounds of the piano. Hauschka’s innovative approach to his tool makes for fascinating watching and a delightful listening experience.
