ALBUM REVIEW: Lail Arad “Someone New”

Label: Notify Music
Release Date: 14.06.2010

Lail Arad’s debut “Someone New” is refreshing in this new decade’s music scene, which is currently dominated by the likes of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga! Lail’s music is alive, her effervescent personality is evoked through it and her lyrics are wild and vivid like those first few singles from No Doubt. Music isn’t just a sound, it is something we search for answers in and use to frame our moods, Lail’s album is perfect for this. While her voice is nothing but beautiful and the folk music is delicately simple, her songs are reflective and emit her sense of humour – kind of a “what the heck” attitude – she vocalises her personal confusion, and comments on the world around her.

Pleasantly, every song on this album is different, the energy of ‘MMM’, the almost bluesy feel to ‘Everyone Is Moving To Berlin’ and the hidden melancholy of ‘Who Am I’; this is the kind of album that you love within one listen and you finish wanting to hear more because she expresses the feelings we have all experienced in such a quirky way that you warm to her immediately. I love ‘Magic’ – her voice is extra beautiful in this song and the sound of the violin strings faintly in the background lift you up and take you away from whatever you are doing, you live in her imagination and her thoughts for the duration of the song. However, my ultimate favourite is ‘Someone New’ – if you like calming, thought-provoking music, injected with a little ‘p-zazz’… Look out for Lail Arad… I have a feeling this girl will go far!
