NEWS: Vortex Outdoors returns to Gillett Square

London’s summer festival gets kickstarted in May with Vortex Outdoors featuring jazz, reggae, soul, funk, folk and hip hop. More than 1,500 music lovers are expected to descend on Dalston’s Gillett Square featuring Don-e, a gifted multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, and Zarif who supported Beyonce on her UK tour in 2009.

The second Vortex Outdoors returns to Gillett Square on Sunday, May 9th from 1pm, a space synonymous with creative talents, promoting social cohesion and a place that invites cultural exchange and education. The free event will bring together a diverse range of communities from across London and is engaging independent artists to perform at the event, many of whom are based locally or in the surrounding areas.

Headlining Vortex Outdoors is Don-e, known for his debut Island Records album Unbreakable. His recording, writing and production credits include Grace Jones, Mutya Buena, Lauryn Hill and Beverley Knight. Don-e’s music combines melodies, sounds and rhythms to create a Ragga Funk style. Zarif will bring the quirky eclectic soul, HKB FiNN will encompass the connection between jazz, conscious hip hop and spiritualised soul and Jamie Woon will blend alternative rock with soul music.

More than 1,500 music lovers are expected to descend on Dalston’s Gillett Square.

Other artists performing at Vortex Outdoors include Elisabeth Troy, Aruba Red, Kevin Mark Trail, Me’sha Bryan, Sharlene Hector, Last Mango in Paris and The Lifeforce Band. There will also be the chance to get involved in a ‘junk art’ sculpture, be part of a film installation and receive free advice and bicycle maintenance. At 8pm a festival after-party will be held in The Vortex jazz club featuring DJ sets from Dusty Lungs (Urban Nerds), Aj Kwame (Afri-kokoa) and Koichi Sakai (Ghetto Lounge).

Festival organiser Clemmie Franks said: “Vortex Outdoors is a great day out for anyone who enjoys listening to quality live music and being part of a positive community event. We encourage people from all walks of life and from different parts of London to help to support our ethos of creating sustainable and cohesive communities.”
