LIVE REVIEW: Free Energy, o2 Academy Birmingham, 18.03.2010

The Philadelphia group are something of an interesting band to see live. The skin tight jeans and flashes of rhythmic hair lead you astray for a few seconds before they start. ‘Dazed & Confused’, ‘Almost Famous’…both spring to mind.

However, the obvious similarities with a certain Kings of Leon is apparent as soon as they start, which in itself is not a bad thing.

LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy has also had a hand in the production of their new release and that clean cut production comes to the fore.

After those first three paragraphs, you may think I am about to say it wasn’t worth the money – but no! Actually, “The Energy” as some call them, are immensely listenable. I mean that with my full respect, and in a positive manner. If someone sent me the album, it would be my first choice for those long, tiring journeys. The performance had direction, the crowd enjoyed it, responded to Spranger and they even had opportunity to put in a quick guitar solo, something more akin to those rock bands of the 70s and 80s.
